Every day, we at UNICEF work to create a better future for the world’s children. This is our most important goal and part of the mandate entrusted to us by the UN General Assembly – to fight for children’s rights, ensure their basic needs are met, and provide them with the best opportunities to develop and thrive.
The need for our efforts has never been greater. In 2024, we witnessed an alarming increase in the number of children caught in humanitarian crises. Nearly 94 million children in 155 countries were in urgent need of life-saving assistance – food, clean water, medical supplies, and protection from war and disasters. At the same time, significant challenges remain in achieving the global development goals for 2030.
Fortunately, we are not facing this task alone. Danish companies and foundations have increasingly taken responsibility for creating lasting and positive change for the world’s children. Through strong partnerships with organizations like UNICEF, ambitions for sustainability and social responsibility are being transformed into concrete actions that make a real difference.
A Framework for Change When companies and foundations collaborate with UNICEF, it can support their strategic goals – and this is where ESG plays a central role. ESG provides a structured and visible framework for documenting the impact that a partnership with UNICEF creates. The growing focus on ESG fosters a common language and increases transparency around how companies affect society.
With our extensive data, UNICEF can highlight the tangible contributions of partners to real change – both now and in the future. As a professional and trustworthy partner, UNICEF aims to be the natural choice for companies, foundations, and individuals who want to make a meaningful difference for the world’s children. With presence in 190 countries and territories and over 13,000 dedicated employees, we reach the most vulnerable children where the need is greatest.
Credibility and Action UNICEF Denmark is one of UNICEF’s 32 National Committees, working to mobilize resources and raise awareness of children’s rights. 2024 marks the first time UNICEF Denmark is publishing an ESG report, which has provided us with a more structured focus on our internal efforts regarding environmental, social, and governance matters.
ESG helps us identify opportunities for improvement while also ensuring greater transparency for our partners and donors. We are firmly committed to continuing this development year after year and making our contributions even more visible. Together with our partners, donors, and employees, we will continue to work purposefully toward a sustainable future for all the world’s children.
Thank you to everyone who contributes. Together, we can create the change the world’s children need. Together, we can rewrite their future!

The Organization of the ESG Work
UNICEF Denmark operates under a UN mandate, and as one of UNICEF’s National Committees, we are required to integrate ESG considerations into our daily operations, strategic planning, and major decision-making processes – not as a separate area, but as a natural part of the organization’s goals and risk management. The Board of Directors is responsible for ensuring that ESG principles are incorporated into strategic decisions, even though we, as an organization, are not subject to the European reporting regulations (CSRD).
ESG efforts at UNICEF Denmark are carried out across the organization as part of daily work and are led by the Director of Strategy and Operations.
The first step in our ESG efforts was to conduct a double materiality analysis and a series of analytical workshops aimed at determining how UNICEF Denmark can specifically work with ESG.
The materiality analysis indicated that several of the ESRS (European Sustainability Reporting Standards) are significant to report on across the following three thematic areas:
Values
Recruitment and retention
Competitiveness
‘Environmental’: Several standards are considered significant across all three of the above thematic areas. Given that the global climate crisis threatens children’s rights now and in the future, environmental sustainability is closely linked to social impact.
‘Social’: All aspects under the social standards are considered significant to report on, to set goals for, and to provide data on for our partners. This includes both working conditions at UNICEF Denmark in Copenhagen and Nuuk, and our work with children as the target group.
‘Governance’: Governance standards are considered significant to report on, as they have a major influence on all three thematic areas and significantly impact the development of the organization.
Although the analyses have shown that all standards are significant to report on, our primary focus has been to initiate ESG work and publish an ESG report as a foundation for sustainable development across Environmental, Social, and Governance dimensions.
What We Cover – and Why
This ESG report pertains solely to UNICEF Denmark, which is one of UNICEF’s 32 National Committees. The report does not include other UNICEF entities based in Copenhagen (such as the UNICEF Supply Division – the Global Warehouse – and the Sustainable WASH Innovation Hub) or elsewhere in the world.
UNICEF Denmark consists of an office in Copenhagen and an office in Nuuk, Greenland. There are seven employees at the Nuuk office and 123 employees in Copenhagen. Additionally, there are significant differences in local conditions. Where possible, we report on both offices, while certain data areas pertain only to the Copenhagen office. It is specifically stated when data includes the Greenland office.
UNICEF Denmark has a relatively short value chain, with most of our environmental impact stemming from our own operations, though we include our supply chains in the report where relevant.
UNICEF Denmark has chosen to align with the Danish Business Authority’s framework for voluntary reporting, which reflects the draft of the new European voluntary sustainability reporting standard for SMEs (VSME).
